2009 Horse Heaven Hills Mourvedre
Mourvedre is an old grape grown mainly in Spain (aka Monastrell)
and southern France. Best known in the Bandol region for it's
dark, inky, long lived wines. Mourvedre is typically a dark,
tannic wine that is full of dark fruit flavors.
The 2009 growing season started cool, and things were looking
pretty iffy even in late May. Things gradually turned around,
and by mid-June we were experiencing record heat that lasted
through July and August. We harvested the grapes in early
October and barrel-aged the wine in 30% new French oak for 18
months, bottle-aged 10 months at release.
Only 50 cases made and it will sell out quickly! $36
100% Mourvedre, Elerding Vineyards,
Horse Heaven Hills AVA
I'll let Rand Sealey describe it: "Sourced from the Elerding
Six Prong Vineyard, this exhibits a deep purplish color and an
in-tense, peppery nose of blackberries, cherries, plums,
tobacco, brambles and rubbed sage. On the palate, the dark
fruits make a bold entry, marked by bittersweet chocolate, cola
and Horse Heaven scorched earth. The intensity continues on the
back with sensations of cherry liqueur, mocha and a squeeze of
pomegranate juice, followed by grindings of pepper and spice on
the sweetish tannin finish. 18.5/20 points."
2009 Red Mountain Syrah
Here is the latest from Red Mountain. This has been a perennial
favorite in the tasting room. This one is no exception. With the
really warm weather in 2009 we crafted a lush, fruity Syrah from
the Ranch at the End of the Road vineyard for the 5th vintage in
a row. It's been in the bottle for about 9 months so it's really
starting to drink good!
It sports an alluring nose of balsam wood, licorice, tapenade,
exotic spices, black raspberry and blueberry. In the glass it
displays layered succulent fruit, good depth and a lenthy fruit
filled finish. Give it 2-3 years to fully blossom and drink it
form 2013 to 2023. Aged in 25% new French oak, with the rest of
the oak being neutral. Alcohol is 14.3%
